I put my first wood shop together by going to garage sales with my dad and bringing home old woodworking machines.
We didn’t have Craigslist or Ebay back then, we used the classified ads in the local newspaper.
We first started buying Craftsman tools and visited the local Sears store for their Saturday Morning specials. Craftsman used to make some good quality tools back in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
I made thousands of small woodworking projects using Craftsman tools.
After a while we started upgrading to the heavier duty Delta Woodworking Machines we found at local garage sales. My first purchase was a Delta 6″ Short Bed Jointer. We got a 24″ Delta Scroll Saw shortly after the that.

Occasionally, we would find a great deal at a store or sometimes, an auction. I bought my first new Delta tool. It was a 12″ Heavy Duty Delta Disc Sander. I purchased it at a going out of business sale for Imperial Hardware. Imperial Hardware was a wonderful tool and hardware store in Long Beach, Ca. That was in 1973, and I still had that machine until recently. When Delta machines were still American Made, they were great tools. They would last a lifetime, unlike a lot of what you see at big box stores these days.

Once we purchased a machine, we’d send away for the owners manuals and instructions (you could do that in the ’70s), take them apart, clean everything and then, rebuild them. Before long they were making sawdust in our wood shop.
